Alcohol Use Disorder Market Set for 13.6% CAGR Growth Through 2034

The alcohol use disorder (AUD) treatment landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by unmet clinical needs, limited effectiveness of existing therapies, and a growing demand for better-tolerated treatment options. Expanding label indications, new regulatory approvals, rising awareness, and a gradual reduction in societal stigma are collectively expected to improve patient access and adoption of therapies — fueling robust market growth between 2025 and 2034.

According to analysis by DelveInsight, the AUD treatment market was valued at approximately USD 1.1 billion across leading markets in 2024. These markets include the United States, the EU4 countries (Germany, France, Italy, and Spain), the United Kingdom, and Japan. Among these, the United States dominated, accounting for nearly 89% of the total market share — reflecting the country's higher diagnosis rates, greater healthcare spending, and more developed pharmaceutical infrastructure compared to other regions.

In 2024, around 37 million 12-month diagnosed prevalent cases of AUD were recorded across these leading markets. Notably, trends in Europe suggest a slightly declining or stable pattern among adolescents and young adults, influenced by shifting social norms, increased health consciousness, and the positive effects of public health campaigns targeting harmful drinking behaviors.

Despite this, the overall burden of AUD globally remains enormous. Diagnoses are projected to climb to approximately 39 million cases by 2034 in the same leading markets, driven by rising work-related stress, lifestyle changes, anxiety disorders, and increased dependency on certain medications. This trajectory underscores the enormous and growing need for effective, accessible treatment solutions.

A Persistent and Widening Treatment Gap

One of the most pressing challenges in the AUD space is the glaring disparity between those who need treatment and those who receive it. Despite the availability of several approved therapies, fewer than 10% of individuals with AUD receive appropriate medical intervention. This treatment gap stems from multiple systemic issues: insufficient screening practices, low public awareness, inadequate treatment infrastructure, and deeply entrenched stigma associated with alcohol dependency.

Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved four medications for AUD over the past seven decades - CAMPRAL (acamprosate), ANTABUSE (disulfiram), REVIA (oral naltrexone), and VIVITROL (extended-release injectable naltrexone). Most of these require patients to achieve abstinence before initiating treatment, which limits their utility for a large segment of the patient population.

In practical clinical settings, SELINCRO has gained an advantage over VIVITROL, largely due to its flexible, as-needed dosing schedule and suitability for non-abstinence-based treatment approaches, making it easier to integrate into primary care. VIVITROL, while FDA-approved, remains underused due to high costs, abstinence requirements, and limited prescriber engagement.

Treatment strategies for AUD span both behavioral and pharmacological approaches. Behavioral interventions include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational enhancement therapy, and structured 12-step programs. However, given that no approved treatments are currently tailored to the severity or individual risk profiles of AUD patients - most receive a one-size-fits-all therapeutic approach - there is clear room for advancement in personalization and precision medicine.

Key Drivers Shaping Market Growth

Several converging factors are expected to propel AUD market growth significantly over the next decade.

Rising disease prevalence remains the foremost driver. Increasing alcohol consumption rates worldwide, compounded by stress-related triggers and lifestyle shifts, continue to expand the diagnosed patient population.

Growing awareness and earlier diagnosis are also playing a pivotal role. Public health campaigns, improved physician education, and broader societal conversations around mental health and substance use are leading more patients to seek care sooner, amplifying market demand.

Robust R&D investment is transforming the pipeline. Pharmaceutical companies are channeling significant resources into developing novel treatments and combination therapies. The pipeline currently includes promising candidates such as BPL-003, Sunobinop, TMP-301/HTL0014242, and Pemvidutide - all under active evaluation in clinical trials targeting moderate-to-severe AUD.

A shift toward personalized and harm-reduction approaches is reshaping treatment paradigms. Combining behavioral interventions with pharmacological therapies, and moving away from abstinence-only models, is creating fresh opportunities for wider adoption of both existing and emerging treatments.

A Pipeline Full of Promise

The competitive landscape in AUD is becoming increasingly dynamic, with several companies advancing differentiated therapies that could redefine standards of care.

AD04 (Adial Pharmaceuticals) is a genetically targeted therapy currently in Phase III development. It targets specific patient genotypes identified through a proprietary companion diagnostic test — representing one of the first precision medicine approaches in AUD. Adial plans to initiate the Phase III trial in the second half of 2025 and is targeting a potential commercial launch by 2027.

BPL-003 (Beckley Psytech and Atai Life Sciences) is a proprietary intranasal 5-MeO-DMT benzoate formulation designed to deliver rapid and lasting results from a single dose with minimal clinic time. In January 2025, Beckley Psytech reported encouraging top-line results from a Phase IIa trial, demonstrating meaningful and sustained reductions in alcohol consumption and heavy drinking days for up to three months following a single dose. These results were presented at the 87th Annual Scientific Meeting of the U.S. College on Problems of Drug Dependence in June 2025.

Sunobinop (Imbrium Therapeutics, a subsidiary of Purdue Pharma) is being evaluated in a Phase II trial for moderate-to-severe AUD, with results expected in 2026 and a potential U.S. launch projected around 2030.

Ibudilast (MediciNova) showed mixed results in a UCLA clinical trial, where it did not significantly reduce overall alcohol consumption compared to placebo. However, a notable benefit was observed specifically among female participants — an important finding that could open targeted treatment avenues.

Pemvidutide (Altimmune) — a GLP-1 receptor agonist — is being evaluated in the RECLAIM Phase II trial, in which the first subject was enrolled in May 2025. This class of therapies has garnered substantial attention for its potential application across metabolic and addiction-related disorders.

TMP-301/HTL0014242 (Tempero Bio and Nxera Pharma) is progressing on the back of a USD 70 million Series B financing round closed in March 2025, led by 8VC with participation from Aditum Bio and Khosla Ventures. Proceeds will fund two Phase II clinical trials for AUD and cocaine use disorder, alongside Phase III-enabling activities.

Understanding Alcohol Use Disorder

AUD is a chronic brain condition characterized by an inability to control alcohol intake despite adverse personal, social, or health consequences. Severity can range from mild to severe and is assessed based on criteria including cravings, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms. The disorder affects millions globally and is more prevalent among men, though incidence is rising among women and younger populations. Key risk factors include genetic predisposition, co-occurring mental health conditions, and early-life alcohol exposure. Left untreated, AUD can lead to serious complications including liver disease, cardiovascular problems, and cognitive decline. Early intervention and a comprehensive, long-term treatment approach - combining medications, behavioral support, and community resources - can significantly improve recovery outcomes.
